Law Professional, having a law degree from the University of the Basque Country, he practiced for eight years as such until in 1999 he was elected councilor. 
From then until 2003 he combined his professional work with the presidency of the Municipal Residence, a task that Eusko Alkartasuna took on that year in 2003.

In 2003, he ceased to practice as a lawyer when he assumed the Presidency of the City Council of Getxo with total dedication. Since 2007 he has been mayor.
